I purchased a soldering station from Amazon, and it’s a great addition to the workshop, but not very portable. And like a lot of us, I have a bunch of old tool cases stashed in the garage while the tools themselves just live in my tool chest. Here’s how I repurposed an old Dewalt case to make my soldering station portable.

There were really one three things I did to make this work:
- Cut out some internal dividers to make room for the tool
- Attach the base to the case with double-sided tape
- 3D print an adapter to allow me to mount the hot iron holder
Here’s a closeup of how I mounted the coiled holder. My drill case had a small well, and I post designed a plastic part to fit in there. To close the case, the 3D-printed part just removes from the case and lays flat.

Other than that, it was just a matter of loading up the required tools. I found a small plastic container to fit some flux, shrink tube, tape, etc. The wire strippers don’t fit very well, and you might want to find a smaller multimeter than I had.

This has been really convenient for taking to robotics competitions. It’s very durable, and reduces one item of clutter in the garage!
